The Chicago Blackhawks signed goaltender Petr Mrazek to a two-year, $8.5 million contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. The deal will keep Mrazek in Chicago through the 2025-26 season.
“I’m very happy that [we got] it done and I’m very grateful for the opportunity that I had last year and what’s going to bring us moving forward,” said Petr Mrazek after signing the extension.
Mrazek, 31, is in his second season with the Blackhawks. The Toronto Maple Leafs traded Mrazek and a first-round draft pick to Chicago in exchange for a second-round pick during the 2022 offseason.
In his first season with Chicago, Mrazek went 10-22-3 in 38 starts with a .894 save percentage. His 3.66 goals-against average in 2022-23 was the highest of his career. This season, Mrazek is 12-17-1 in 30 starts with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
Mrazek began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He played 166 games across six seasons with Detroit before being traded to Philadelphia during the 2017-18 season. After that season, Mrazek signed as a free agent with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Mrazek’s best seasons have come with the Hurricanes, going 50-32-8 with a 2.48 goals-against average during his three years there. He started playoff games in each of the three seasons and posted two shutouts during Carolina’s run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2019.
The Toronto Maple Leafs ended up signing Mrazek to a three-year, $11.4 million contract when he became a free agent in 2021. Mrazek is currently in the final year of that deal and was scheduled to become a free agent after this season.
Mrazek has played 366 games in his NHL career. He has a record of 162-141-35 with a career 2.78 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
