What Should the Red Sox Do with Bobby Dalbec?

Bobby Dalbec is putting up insane numbers right now in AAA Worcester but it’s not likely to see him in Boston soon.

In Worcester, Bobby Dalbec is batting .310/.426/.662/.1.088 with 14 home runs over 40 games. That’s two more home runs than he hit in all of 2022 in 77 less games at the major league level. He has already collected 35 runs batted in, which is only four less than all of last season. Despite absolutely tearing the cover off the ball right now, there are no signs of a possible call-up.

Triston Casas is the Red Sox’s go-to candidate for first base right now. Despite his early struggles at the plate, he is starting to put things together. In his last 30 games, Casas is hitting .229/.336/.417 with four home runs and 10 runs batted in. He is also working walks more than anyone on the team, being in the 93rd percentile in walk percentage. These numbers combined with Justin Turner being one of the most reliable bats in the lineup, it seems that there is nowhere for Bobby Dalbec in this lineup.

The Red Sox attempted to use Dalbec to fill the shortstop position earlier in the year, but that backfired quickly. Bobby has only played in eight games this year in the MLBl, where he collected two hits and two walks. 

Is Dalbec a Potential Trade Candidate When the Deadline Comes?

This production from Dalbec with no movement from AAA to Boston is suggesting the Red Sox have something in mind for the young first baseman. This will most likely come in the form of a trade. Bobby’s full potential at the major league level was at the end of 2021 where he was one of the hottest hitters in the league from August-September. But the Red Sox held on to him despite his trade value being at its highest. We are seeing his trade value go up again so maybe this time the Red Sox will pull the trigger and trade him by the deadline.

Starting pitching is the Red Sox’s biggest question mark right now. Chris Sale has hit the 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation but it’s unsure how much time he will actually miss. Corey Kluber has been sent to the bullpen after a lackluster Red Sox debut. Nick Pivetta has met this same fate, but has been really solid so far in relief appearances.

Overall, the rotation needs some reinforcements. If the Red Sox are able to move Dalbec, we could be seeing a starting pitcher coming through those doors come the trade deadline. On top of all of this, a change of scenery could be all the Bobby needs to thrive at the major league level.
