Brock Purdy injured his elbow on the 49ers first drive during the NFC Championship game, Sunday.

Purdy drove the 49ers to the 50 on their first possession. On a second-and-6, San Francisco tried some play-action trickery. In the end, Eagles defensive end Haason Reddick blew past tight end Tyler Kroft and hit Purdy’s arm as he threw. This resulted in a fumble, and Purdy leaving the game.

After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that the team needs to have an MRI done to determine the severity of the injury. Though, it is reported that the rookie QB is likely to undergo Tommy John surgery.

The MRI will show whether or not the UCL is ruptured and a negative result would lead to a six-week recovery period for Purdy. A rupture would lead to a longer timeline, but it’s not clear exactly how long. UCL tears are common amongst MLB pitchers, and that requires a longer timeline for recovery. However, that outlook doesn’t apply to quarterbacks as there is a difference in throwing motions.

The 49ers did however re-enter Purdy into the game when fourth-string QB Josh Johnson went down with a concussion in the third quarter. Though, it was obvious that there were limitations as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ only threw passes, both were short screenplays.

The results of the MRI came Monday and concluded that Purdy suffered a complete tear in his throwing elbow. He will undergo surgery, but the hope is that he will be able to have a repair rather than have reconstruction done. The former Cyclone is going to get a second opinion, but him attending training camp may be in danger.

Once again, the 49ers will enter the season with some uncertainty at the quarterback position. Will Shanahan and his crew give Trey Lance another opportunity after his injury? Or will Brock Purdy enter the season as the starter?
