Alabama quarterback Bryce Young canceled his remaining pre-draft visits Monday after only visiting the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans.
“A sign to back up the belief he will be the Panthers’ pick,” Tom Pelissero said.
After the decision, Young’s FanDuel odds of being selected No. 1 by the Panthers increased to -1050. Young has been the favorite to go No. 1 in April after Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud was the favorite in March when Carolina traded up to the No. 1 spot. Stroud and Kentucky quarterback Will Levis were scheduled to visit Carolina Tuesday but will now be overshadowed by Young becoming the bonified favorite.
“In talking with people in that Carolina Panthers building, I would handicap Bryce Young as the favorite at this point,” Cameron Wolfe said.
Young has impressed Carolina at his Alabama Pro Day, but also with a 98 on the S2 cognitive test, scoring higher than Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.
“Young did really well on the S2 test, a cognitive assessment to measure processing speed that some teams put a lot of stock in when it comes to evaluating quarterbacks,” Albert Breer said. “Close to half the NFL’s 32 teams subscribe to the test, the Panthers being one of them. Tepper is also said to be a believer in it.”
With the NFL Draft April 27 and the Panthers on the clock, it seems they’ve found their next franchise quarterback. Meanwhile, the Texans will have to decide on selecting Stroud or Will Anderson. If Houston goes in a different direction, the Arizona Cardinals will likely trade down from the No. 3 pick, and a team in need of a quarterback will rise to the top three.
