Former Tampa Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has reached out to Notre Dame regarding the teams vacant position, per Grace Remington.
Leftwich, recently fired by the Bucs, has served as the team’s offensive coordinator since 2019. Leftwich and the Bucs won Super Bowl LV in 2021, ultimately coaching one of the best put-together offenses led by Hall-of-Fame quarterback Tom Brady. Before his tenure in Tampa, Leftwich spent four seasons in Arizona as a coaching intern and quarterbacks coach.
The Bucs had a down year this past season due to offensive struggles. Leftwich, 43 years old, was previously seen as a top candidate for a head coach position. However, the Buccaneers offensive struggles have knocked him off the radars for now. Don’t expect that to be permanent, though. Organizations love a young offensive mind. Expect Leftwich to get another shot at head coaching.
Moreover, Notre Dame was suddenly left with a vacant offensive coordinator position when longtime coach Tommy Rees left for Alabama’s OC position. Rees, 30 years old, had spent the past six seasons as a coach for Notre Dame. He spent three seasons as the teams quarterback coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2020.
Furthermore, it was evident that Rees, one of the best young minds in college football, would receive other offers. The factor of coaching Nick Saban most likely played a major part in his decision.
Along with Notre Dame, Leftwich has communicated with the Baltimore Ravens about the teams open offensive coordinator position, according to Jeff Zrebeic.
Evidently, Leftwich will have plenty of suitors for many vacant offensive coordinator positions. But for Notre Dame, who is knocking on the door of the College Football Playoff, it would be wise to add a super-bowl winning coach to the mix.
