Calvin Ridley signs a four year contract with the Titans

Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that free agent Calvin Ridley signed a four-year contract with the Tennessee Titans.

After missing most of 2021 due to mental health reasons, and the entirety of 2022 because of a suspension for gambling– Ridley was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 5th and 3rd round pick. Following a hot week one, Ridley proceeded to have a decent season by his standards. With 76 receptions for 1016 yards and 8 touchdowns, he ended up leading the team in receiving yards and TDs. Although, when you examine his game logs the production was a bit inconsistent.

The Jags ended up reportedly offering Ridley just over $20 million per year. Nevertheless, the news of Ridley signing a four-year contract with the Titans caught some by surprise.

It really is quite an offensive shift for the Titans now. After six straight seasons of 200+ touches a year, Derrick Henry is now in Baltimore. Ryan Tannehill is a fading free agent who had his job taken by Will Levis. And former Bengals offensive coordinator, Brian Callahan, has taken the place of Mike Vrabel as head coach. It seems like after half a decade of establishing the run first, Callahan is taking a new attempt at a formidable passing attack to pick apart defenses.

However, the run is not just “going away” for Tennessee. Their first signing of free agency was Tony Pollard, who is a very capable player. Pollard ran for 1000 yards last season, he just struggled to find the endzone with only 6 rushing TDs. But with this type of passing attack defenses should have to worry about, there could be some positive regression coming for Pollard and the paydirt.

Perhaps the most interesting outcome of this transaction is what the Titans can now do in the draft. With two stud wide receivers and a young quarterback, Tennessee can now focus on grabbing an offensive lineman with their 7th overall pick. Joe Alt out of Notre Dame could be a great pick, and even Olumuyiwa Fashanu is a good call- but recent mock drafts say they can trade back for those guys. Maybe Taliese Fuaga falls to them in a draft with a copious amount of quarterback and wide receiving talent.

Chalk this one up as a win for the Titans. Even when you consider how they traded AJ Brown away because they didn’t want to give him a $100 million deal. Only $50 million of Ridley’s contract with the Titans is guaranteed. So, for the time being he still has to prove his worth.
