Tony Pollard

With a little bit of surprise, the Titans first free agent signing is a running back. According to Aaron Wilson, the Tennessee Titans will sign Tony Pollard. The Titans have not needed to worry about the running back position for eight seasons. However, there’s was an expectation throughout the season that the Titans and Derrick Henry would part ways.

Pollard and Henry are very different running backs. The latter is a pound-for-pound bell cow, who will use his strength and speed to fight for every yard. He’s an old-school power back, where as the newly acquired running back (Pollard) is more of a receiving back. Pollard is not like that and could split time with Tyjae Spears. The signing of Tony Pollard officially closes the door for a Henry return to Tennessee. It’s been known since Brian Callahan got the job that Henry may be on his way out.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it is a three-year deal worth $24 million. That is about the same amount that D’Andre Swift got with the Bears.

For the past two seasons, the former fourth-round pick out of Memphis had 1,300 all-purpose yards. A lot different than what the Titans fans are used to seeing with King Henry, who has led the league in carries for four of the past five seasons. For Pollard, it’ll be a homecoming as he not only went to school in Memphis, but also grew up in Tennessee.

Nothing has been stated publicly that Henry won’t return yet. He still has one year left on his contract. However, a change of scenery could be good for him. The Titans have failed to build a championship-caliber team around him.
