Los Angeles Chargers center Corey Linsley told reporters Monday that he is “99%” sure he will retire from the NFL. Linsley only played in three games this season due to a heart issue that has kept him off the field since September.
The 32-year-old signed a five-year, $62.5 million contract with the Chargers during the 2021 offseason.
After Week 3, Los Angeles placed Linsley on the non-football illness list for what was diagnosed as a “non-emergent heart issue.” Linsley said that he will have more tests in March before ultimately making a final decision, according to ESPN’s Kris Rhim.
The Green Bay Packers drafted Linsley in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played seven seasons for the Packers, starting 99 games under center with the team. In his final season with Green Bay in 2020, Linsley was a first-team All-Pro for the first and only time in his career.
After the 2020 season, Linsley signed as a free agent with the Chargers. In his first season under center for Los Angeles, Linsley made his first Pro Bowl after starting 16 games. The following season, Linsley played in 14 games, missing a few due to a concussion and knee injury. Los Angeles made the playoffs that year, losing in the wild-card round to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Linsley was named to the NFL Top 100 list in 2021 and 2022, appearing at number 60 in both editions.
If Corey Linsley does indeed retire from the NFL, he will have played 33 regular season games for the Chargers. He started 12 playoff games in his career, 11 coming with the Packers. Linsley has suited up in 132 career regular season games, starting in every single one of them.
