Pitchers and catchers are officially reported to Spring Training to prepare for the 2023 season. We havs seen many smiling faces arrive at their teams’ camps, so far. However, Brewers’ ace, Corbin Burnes, arrived in Phoenix for Spring Training this morning not as pleased as everyone else.

The Brewers Are Penny-Pinching Corbin Burnes

This past Wednesday, Corbin Burnes and the Milwaukee Brewers settled their arbitration dispute, with Burnes losing to the team. Burnes will end up making $10.1MM in 2023, rather than the $10.75MM he was seeking. This dispute over a mere $600k reportedly has affected Burnes’ relationship with the organization. Even going as far as the Brewers blaming him for not making the postseason.

Corbin Burnes opened up to reporters today about his situation saying “There is no denying the relationship is definitely hurt”. He followed up by saying the Brewers were “Basically putting me in the forefront of why we didn’t make it to the postseason last year. That’s something that probably doesn’t need to be said.” Full video below per @AdamMcCalvy on Twitter.

This whole situation looks bad for the Brewers. Fighting over $600k with your ace who has been in your organization for seven years is not ideal. It’s penny-pinching your best player.

Corbin Burnes is set to become a free agent after the 2023 season. This dispute over his final year sets a pretty bad precedent regarding Burnes’ future in Milwaukee. Whether that means a trade request is coming or not is unsure. But it wouldn’t be surprising. It’s safe to say that Burnes’ time as a Brewer will be up soon, it’s just a matter of if he will leave in free agency or sooner.
