The Dallas Cowboys announced Saturday that they’ve hired Brian Schottenheimer to fill their vacant offensive coordinator role. The role was previously held by Kellen Moore, who left to be the OC of the Chargers.

Coaching Career

Brian Schottenheimer played quarterback at the University of Kansas and the University of Florida but hardly saw the field prior to graduating in 1996. He first got his coaching start with the St. Louis Rams in 1997. Schottenheimer had been with 8 different NFL teams prior to joining the Cowboys last year.

He’s moved around a lot, coaching college and NFL offenses, mostly spending time as an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. It’s fair to say Brian Schottenheimer brings experience and a strong understanding of the offensive side of the ball. He is also the son of legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer.

Role with the Cowboys

Schottenheimer spent 2022 as a coaching analyst for Dallas, but will now take on a larger role. Despite this, head coach Mike McCarthy is expected to call plays for the Cowboys’ offense in 2023.

With quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier being let go, it begs the question of whether Schottenheimer will pick up that role as well. The Cowboys ranked third in scoring in 2022, after leading the league in that category in 2021. Quarterback Dak Prescott has had some very bright moments in the past couple of seasons, and the team hopes the offensive coaching changes will help take advantage of that.
