The Houston Astros and Cristian Javier are in agreement on a five-year, $64M extension through his age 30 season. Javier has become one of the most dominant right-handed starting pitchers in baseball who was set to become a free agent after the 2023 season. However, the Astros believed that he is one of their key players and extended him.

Per @JeffPassan on Twitter, this deal comes with a $2M signing bonus. Along with this, Javier is set to make $3M this coming season, followed by $7M in 2024, $10M in 2025, and $21M through seasons 2026 and 2027. 

Very Nice 2022 Season For Cristian Javier

Christian Javier had a very solid 2022 season, going 11-9 with 25 starts. He finished the year with a 2.54 ERA and a 0.948 WHIP over 148.2 innings pitched. He also finished with 194 strikeouts and only 52 walks the whole season.

The Houston Astros’ 2022 World Series campaign was a dominant one. And Cristian Javier was a key factor in earning their second ring in five years. Javier was the starting pitcher in a very historic game in the World Series, the no hitter. In this appearance, Cristian went six hitless innings, followed by the bullpen to finish off the no-no. 

The Astros are looking to make it back to October this year even after only a couple additions this winter. They have only added on to their scary lineup by adding first baseman Jose Abreu and now extending Cristian Javier. The AL West is getting stronger with teams like the Rangers making moves and the Mariners being a contender again. Will the Astros’ have enough to remain on top?
