The Cleveland Browns appeared to be set at wide receiver for the upcoming football season. Rumors have swirled all off-season that the Browns could make a big splash. A few weeks ago the Browns traded for former New York Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore. Once this trade was completed many speculated Cleveland was finished in that position group outside the draft. However, according to some news and rumors the Browns could be in the mix to land another elite wide receiver. That elite wide receiver is three-time pro bowler DeAndre Hopkins. Adding Hopkins would be the best fit for the Browns and himself.
DeAndre Hopkins Continually Linked To Browns
The possibility of the Browns adding another elite wide receiver seemed like an impossibility. As well as adding Hopkins via trade from the Arizona Cardinals seemed slim to known. Rumors of Hopkins and quarterback Deshaun Watson reuniting in Cleveland have persisted all off-season. That door seemed to have been closed because of the amount of money left on Hopkins’s current contract. Along with speculation he would want more money in his next destination. Those rumors and speculation were put to bed when Hopkins himself said on social media he doesn’t want or need a new deal in his next location. Which has made things a little simpler in adding Hopkins.
Cardinals May Cut Hopkins
The Cardinals went public months ago about wanting to trade Hopkins and him being on the trade block. As a result of going public with the trade. The trade market has been very quiet this off-season for the former pro-bowler who has a 21 million dollar cap hit. Arizona was reportedly looking for a second-round pick. Plus a conditional draft selection in return. However, if the Cardinals would choose to cut Hopkins they could save 9 million dollars in cap space. With a trade seeming hard to get done, the Cardinals could choose to go the route of cutting Hopkins.
Duo Reunited In Cleveland
Watson and Hopkins played together with the Houston Texans. The two experienced great success and had even better chemistry on the field. All off-season the speculation of them being reunited in Cleveland has been continuous. The best thing about this is that the Browns ownership has shown a willingness to spend in order to compete. So trying to find a way to make a deal for Hopkins isn’t out of the realm of possibility. The obstacle was trading for Hopkins and he wanted a new deal. With the contract situation being shot down and the possibility of Hopkins being cut coming up. A path for Watson and Hopkins to be reunited is becoming clear.
A DeAndre Hopkins, Amari Cooper Duo Is A Top Ten Offense
Adding Hopkins to the Browns’ offense would make them close to unstoppable. Hopkins who is a three-time pro bowler and electric himself would do wonders with this offense. For Amari Cooper his first season with the Browns he had 78 receptions. With 1,160 yards and nine total touchdowns for the season. Only playing in nine games, Hopkins had 64 receptions with 717 yards and a total of three touchdowns. For both Cooper and Hopkins, the production for both guys is still there. Pairing them with Nick Chubb and a top offensive line in the NFL, this offense would be very dangerous.
Conclusion
In order for any of this to work Hopkins would first need to be cut by the Cardinals. Cleveland may have to do some cap restructuring having only 7.8 million in cap space. However, some of that remaining cap money needs to be available to sign rookies from the NFL draft. Then finally, if cut Hopkins would have to show interest in going to Cleveland and reuniting with Watson. After all, rumors suggest that Hopkins would not be opposed to the move. However, time will only tell if any of this can happen or just stay as rumors and speculation. Therefore, Hopkins signing with the Browns would be his best fit. As a result of his signing pairing him with Watson, Chubb in the backfield, a top-ten offensive line, and an explosive Cooper. Above all an offense that can simply add Hopkins in seamlessly has Super Bowl potential.
