The Arizona Cardinals DeAndre Hopkins has been rumored to be traded or released before the start of the 2023 season. Hopkins who was traded to the Cardinals from the Houston Texans had great expectations playing with Kyler Murray. However, things have not worked out how they envisioned. Hopkins who is a former pro bowler turns 31 in June. So far this off-season the market has been very slow. Former Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said “There’s a reason why a deal for Hopkins hasn’t gotten done yet. The problem is the contact.” He has a combined $56.95 million dollar cap hit the next two seasons. For example, in 2023 he has a $30.75 million cap hit and a $26.2 million hit in 2024. Despite the money teams could still take a chance via trade or if he is released.
New York Giants
The New York Giants are coming off a surprising run in the playoffs in 2022. They could really use the help on the outside from a wide receiver. A season ago the Giants did not have a receiver gain over 750 yards total for the season. Above all, adding Hopkins would be a move to appease quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones had his best season as a pro in 2022. Adding Hopkins would only help Jones grow as a signal caller. As well as help open up the run game for Saquon Barkley.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots could use a top receiving option to help their third-year quarterback Mac Jones. Entering his third season Jones hasn’t had a prolific receiver to depend on. Early on in free agency, the Patriots added veteran wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster. Only adding Smith-Schuster to the Patriots’ offense will not be sufficient enough. Coupled with not having a reliable receiving threat on offense. The Patriots lost Jakobi Meyers to the Las Vegas Raiders. His leaving makes an already thin group even more Vulnerable.
Chicago Bears
Another team to watch would be the Chicago Bears. The Bears have been spending big this off-season trying to secure more options for quarterback Justin Fields. The Bears have already added help for Fields when they traded with the Panthers for the first overall pick and D.J. Moore. Landing Hopkins would accelerate Chicago’s rebuild and help them be more competitive in 2023. Adding Hopkins with already having Moore would really stimulate the growth of a young quarterback as Fields needs early in his career.
Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns adding Hopkins would pair himself and starting quarterback Deshaun Watson together again. This might be the best fit because of the chemistry and history he and Watson share. They experienced great success playing with one another. Adding him to a recently deepened wide receiver room would be the icing on the cake. Above all, what this would bring to the Browns is proven success in Hopkins and Watson. In recent years Cleveland has looked good on paper but it hasn’t translated to the field.
Up And Coming Teams
The Detroit Lions are a young group up and coming that could make some noise next season. Another young team is the Los Angeles Chargers. Hopkins would be a very strong addition to that team. As well as the New York Jets could be a solid landing spot to pair with Aaron Rodgers when a deal is finally done. With the Jets losing out on the Odell Beckham Jr sweepstakes Hopkins could be a reasonable replacement. Adding the services of Hopkins would help these teams become potential contenders and take them over the top. However, it is important to realize any team trading for Hopkins will have to pay a lot of money. For some of the other teams, the option of adding Hopkins would only happen if he is released.
