Diego Fagot: Navy’s NFL Draft Prospect

Diego Fagot

Diego Fagot (pronounced fuh-GO), has emerged as one of the best linebackers in the history of the Naval Academy. It’s a rarity to see players from the military academies move on to the NFL. If they do, it usually does not happen right away. Roger Staubach had to wait and went on to have a great career. Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona is a more relevant example who made the jump right away from Navy as a second round pick, and still fulfills his commitments in the offseason. Fagot has a chance to do the same and at the Army Navy game, two NFL scouts were in attendance strictly to watch him.

What He Brings

First and foremost, intelligence. To become an officer in the United States military there is a lot of studying and preparation involved. As the middle linebacker, he had to be one of the smartest players, if not the smartest, on the field. He was a little extra jazzed up for the game against Army and took a couple penalties he doesn’t usually take, but he will instantly bring discipline to whatever team he joins. His intensity and passion are second to none. Fagot had 282 total tackles in his time at Navy with 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Due to his athleticism, he also managed to pull off a fake punt against Army which is pictured above.

Teams Could Use Him

Plenty of teams will be looking to get stronger on the defensive side of the ball. The following teams should be doing some extra work on Fagot with the intention of trying to draft him:

New England Patriots

New York Giants

Detroit Lions

Houston Texans

Las Vegas Raiders

New York Jets

Jacksonville Jaguars

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks still have Bobby Wagner working the middle, but he can’t play forever. The Patriots have an aging defensive unit that could benefit from a boost of youth. Dont’a Hightower is not the same player. Kyle Van Noy is still pretty good overall. He could help bring Fagot along so he can take over as the heart of that defense. The Patriots also have strong ties to the Naval Academy. The rest of these teams have had horrible defensive production in 2021, and in some cases prior to that. Some of these teams will have a top five or ten pick which will allow them to take a top defensive player off the board and then take Fagot later on. That would be huge to some of these teams. We’ll see what happens come April, but Diego Fagot has certainly become a name to watch.
