Kelenic Powers Mariners Win Streak

The Seattle Mariners made a significant trade Sunday Evening sending three well-known players to Atlanta. Amongst those players headed to the Braves are Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales and Evan White. Jeff Passan of ESPN and Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reported the full details.

Shortly afterward, the Mariners confirmed the deal with General Manager Jerry Dipoto‘s statements in a press release.

“I want to thank Marco, JK and Evan for the contributions to our club. All three played key roles at different stages of our growth over the past several seasons,” said President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto. “As we continue to work through this offseason with a goal of improving our team for 2024 and beyond, we believe the additions of Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips, as well as the roster and payroll flexibility created tonight, will move us closer to that goal.”

Passan had characterized the deal as a salary dump on social media:

In addition to the Mariners trading Eugenio Suarez on Nov. 22, this could mean one of two things.

A: The Mariners could be going after some big-name free agents. This would further prove the Mariners believe they are at a spot where they can contend. Just two seasons ago, they broke the playoff drought. Last season saw them miss the playoffs by a game. Adding two bats to the lineup might be able to push the Mariners into contention for a deep playoff run. They could also be a surprise team in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes.

B: The Mariners don’t think that they’re anywhere near competing quite yet and want to finish off the rebuild before the final push. In that sense, adding a guy like Cole Phillips would make sense. He’s a top prospect for the Braves.

With Kelenic now headed to the Braves, the trade proposal from the Mariners is busted.

Though, scenario B seems less likely with the rise of players such as Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, JP Crawford, Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh. Either way, it is safe to say that the offseason is far from over for the Mariners.

With Kelenic and Gonzales heading to the Braves, Crawford becomes the longest-tenured Mariner.
