On Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles made a trade for Kenny Pickett– but that wasn’t the news that caught the most attention. In light of the trade, it was unearthed that the Eagles were very close to trading for Justin Fields as their backup QB to Jalen Hurts.
It comes as a surprise for the former #11 overall pick. Do teams really view Fields, who the Bears traded up for in 2021, as a backup QB? As they say, actions speak louder than words. And NFL teams have seemingly been okay with leaving Fields on the shelf while making moves for other guys.
Coming into the off-season, Fields was the talk of the NFL town. There were talks of him being traded to Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, and more teams around the league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal. The Atlanta Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year contract with $100 million guaranteed. Vegas went after Gardner Minshew, giving him a surprisingly large contract. Even Sam Darnold got a one-year deal with the Vikings that almost assures him the starting role. There are almost no more landing spots for Fields as the clear-cut starting QB.
So, is Chicago just going to ride it out with Fields? The Bears have built a pretty stellar offense around him this off-season. Chicago has signed D’Andre Swift to a contract and traded for Keenan Allen. Add in the DJ Moore addition last off-season, and the Bears have constructed an offense with weapons around the QB.
The only question we still don’t have an answer to: who will be the QB?
With the Bears having the #1 overall pick in this upcoming draft, every analyst is projecting Caleb Williams to be the Bears starting QB next season. But now the narrative could be changing. Chicago could trade down and probably get a solid haul for the pick. Another option a lot haven’t considered though is just drafting Williams and keeping Fields. Sure, it would force some tension in training camp. But maybe tension is what Justin Fields needs to light a fire under himself.
The Bears could also get a look at who they like side-by-side and then trade away the future backup. Or they could just roll with both in case of injuries. All in all, Chicago has a lot of flexibility going into the 2024 NFL draft.
