Keenan Allen could end up being cut due to salary cap

The Chicago Bears acquired Keenan Allen from the Chargers in a blockbuster trade, as reported by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.

According to a league source, Allen was asked by the Chargers to cut a part of his $23.1 million base salary and roster bonus, but he declined. Edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa agreed to reworked contracts. According to NFL Network, Bosa and Mack agreed to take a pay cut of $7 million and $4.25 million each. Both of them are coming back. Allen isn’t.

Next month, Allen will turn 32 years old. Having 904 receptions for 10,530 yards and 59 touchdowns throughout his career, he has numbers that many would consider Pro Football Hall of Fame worthy. He made the Pro Bowl the previous season. Last season, he recorded career highs of 1,243 yards and 108 receptions.

Since 2019, Allen hasn’t played in a complete season.

After Mike Williams‘ injury, Allen stepped up for the Chargers, posting career-best stats.

Ryan Poles’ move secures two elite receivers, helping Caleb Williams’ chances with the Bears if they decide to draft him.

“What Keenan Allen has meant to the Chargers for more than a decade cannot adequately be expressed through mere words,” Chargers president of football operations John Spanos said in a statement. “There will only be one Keenan Allen, and we cannot thank him enough for the contributions he has made to our organization both on and off the field.”

Allen’s acquisition helps Poles ease any concerns that may arise with free agents. When a team acquires a player like Allen, who has been a quarterback’s best friend his whole career, they are getting a known asset. This is crucial for a team that could have a rookie quarterback in 2024. The Bears have to decide if they will build this offense for Justin Fields or future No.1 pick Caleb Williams.
