Eric Bieniemy

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was hired as the 2023 Washington Commanders offensive coordinator; after Bieniemy wanted an upgraded title in Kansas City, he decided to coach elsewhere.

Eric Bieniemy joins Commanders head coach Ron Rivera as Bieniemy was Rivera’s No. 1 choice after firing 2022 offensive coordinator Scott Turner.

Bieniemy will take control of play-calling in the move to Washington as Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was the primary play-caller for Kansas City. This was a move that had to be made for Bieniemy as he looks to become a head coach in 2024 and will have the spotlight to shine in leading the Commanders offense.

The 2022 Commanders ranked 20th in yards and 24th in points, meaning Bieniemy will have work to do to improve those numbers as the Commanders face several questions heading into 2023. One is ownership, as owner Dan Snyder will likely sell the team before the 2023 season. Also, the Commanders face quarterback issues as the team hasn’t had a consistent starting quarterback since Kirk Cousins. The promising 2022 rookie quarterback Sam Howell will be considered an option, but the Commanders likely need another option to be a contender. The offense has the framework to be explosive, with Terry McLaurin at wide receiver and Brian Robinson at running back.

Since being a part of the Kansas City coaching staff in 2018, the Chiefs have ranked in the top seven every season in offensive points and yards, winning two Super Bowls and appearing in five AFC Championships. This is also because quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the leader on offense, so in leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy will have to show the league that he can still be a successful offensive coordinator with a different team and quarterback.

The Chiefs are expected to name senior assistant and quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy as the next offensive coordinator to fill in for Bieniemy. Nagy held the offensive coordinator position in Kansas City in 2017 before being hired as the Chicago Bears head coach in 2018.
