On April 4th, the Monday Night Raw, the Raw after Mania episode a huge return took place, but it wasn’t the Cody one that everyone was tuning in for. It was the return of the repackaged Elias, now known as Ezekiel. Elias hasn’t been on tv since July 19th, 2021 and some vignettes that aired shortly after, where the superstar burned his guitar, signaling a new chapter in his career.
Elias was a fan favorite among the crowd during his tenure on the main roster, originally appearing as the Drifter from NXT. He was called up in the spring of 2017 and remained a mainstay for the majority until his disappearance last summer. He was not always featured in prominent storylines, but always managed to find his way onto our television screens. His most notable rivalry took place against John Cena, ironically enough they never had a one on one match. Their last encounter came at WrestleMania 35 when Cena returned with his “Dr. of Thuganomics” gimmick and hit Elias with an Attitude Adjustment, at the Showcase of the Immortals.
Fast forward to today and Elias has returned with his new persona, his brother Ezekiel, who looks just like him and has taken over his social media accounts. Ezekiel made his first appearance on the Raw after Mania and interrupted Kevin Owens while he was speaking in the ring. Ezekiel refused to acknowledge that he and Elias are the same person and this was the kick off for his current program with KO. The following week, Ezekiel and Kevin Owens ended up face to face during a Tommaso Ciampa interview. Where Kevin tried calling him out for his current antics, but both Ciampa and himself refused to acknowledge the current circumstances at hand.
This is where we are currently with the current program and this upcoming Monday Night Raw in Buffalo, Kevin Owens is going to make Ezekiel take a lie detector test so he can get to the bottom of this current issue at hand. This program so far has been for comedic purposes, but the fans have totally bought into it. Everytime Zeke is on television, he becomes the talk on social medias. He has even continued the fun on social medias, by posting an image of him and Elias in the same photo asking how they can be the same person if they have a photo together.
We have no idea for what WWE has in store longterm for the gimmick, but right now it is a huge hit for the fans and will carry momentum as long as he is working with Kevin Owens. Hopefully WWE can figure out a way to continue the momentum past this program into the future and Ezekiel, just like his older brother Elias, will become a mainstay on WWE television.
