Almost two-thirds of the mid-season market has gone by. Apart from dramas like the Cristiano Ronaldo to Saudi Arabia saga, teams from the top 5 leagues have brought in some quality winter transfers to strengthen their squad depths for the rest of the season. Let’s look at 5 signings so far that can alter the course of the season.

Yann Sommer (Borussia Mönchengladbach to Bayern Munich): 10 million USD

Manuel Neuer’s injury became a severe headache for Bayern’s upper level. Add that to the inconsistency of Sven Ulreich, and it calls for a need to sign a new goalkeeper. Bayern immediately dialed up Yann Sommer for replacement. The Swiss international has shown his class for years, with a great showing in the 2020 European Tournament and, especially, against Bayern. Although he is shorter than average goalkeepers, Sommer always produces show-stopping reflexes in clutch moments. An excellent signing for the German champion.

Mislav Orsic (Dinamo Zagreb to Southampton): 11 million USD

A sneaky signing from Southampton. Mislav Orsic has had his fair share of moments this season, from terrorizing Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League Group Stage to scoring the game-winner to clinch Third Place for Croatia in the World Cup. The Croatian has blazing speed and a magnificent skill set that can be beneficial for Southampton to stay alive in the Premier League. For Orsic himself, a move to the big league can open up new horizons for his future. Also, great news for FIFA lovers.

Benoit Badiashile (AS Monaco to Chelsea): 40.5 million USD

Chelsea has made a lot of winter transfers, but this one stood out. Benoit Badiashile has been the target of many contending clubs for years. The twenty-one-year-old possesses an incredible physique and strength for a center-back. Now donning blue, Badiashile brings a trustworthy option for Graham Potter’s torn-up defensive line now and in the future. The French center-back is yet to make an impact on the international level compared to his peers, but his talent is still undeniable. His first showing for Chelsea in the Premier League left good remarks.

Matheus Cunha (Atletico Madrid to Wolverhampton Wanderers): Loan

An outstanding performance in Brazil’s Olympic-winning squad granted Cunha a move to Spain. However, his output in La Liga was below expectations. A new destination is needed for Matheus Cunha to find his old ways, like what he did in Hertha Berlin. Wolves fans are delighted to see another Portuguese-speaking and Brazillian flair wearing orange. Cunha could be a crucial attacking piece for Lopetegui’s team, which is struggling to find its way to score and now fighting against relegation.

Leandro Trossard (Brighton to Arsenal): 26 million USD

After losing Mudryk to rival Chelsea, Arsenal might have found a better value in the Belgian international. Leandro Trossard is one of the most exciting finds of the Premier League this season. Under the limelight of American Express Stadium, he displays a tremendous knack for goals. Arsenal brings in a player that can wreak havoc against big teams and be a quality rotational piece to Martinelli, Odegaard, and Saka. This addition could help The Gunners contend for a Premier League title after nearly two decades. Maybe missing out on Mudryk and other winter transfers is a blessing in disguise, after all.
