Florida State ACC

Florida State and Clemson are the two of the biggest teams remaining that haven’t joined the SEC, BIG TEN or BIG 12. That might change soon enough. The Board of Trustees have scheduled to meet Friday morning to discuss the potential realignment as Florida State looks to exit the ACC according to multiple reports.

After failing to make the CFP, it makes sense. Despite adding both Stanford and California for next season, the ACC still appears to be weaker than the rest of the Power 5 Conferences. It’s been a wild goose chase for College Football teams to get the best television revenue deals. It’s apparent that Florida State wants out of the ACC and their 20-year contract with ESPN. A contract that pays each team $30 Million annually. However, the BIG TEN and SEC have expanded and received richer media packages.

Teams in those conferences could make twice as much as the teams in the ACC make. There is no clear landing spot for FSU if they do decide that this is the best move.

As it sounds right now the SEC seems content with 16 teams. However, adding a team like FSU would put a hold on the BIG TEN gaining a foothold in the region. The latter conference doesn’t care about geography or culture. They’re already launching a four-team west wing in 2024 with USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington. Of course, like Action Network’s Brett McMurphy stated FSU leaving would create a disastrous ripple effect. Once Florida State and Clemson leave, other teams in the ACC could look to jump ship as well.

Adding a team like Florida State makes sense for the Big Ten, it would not only give them another team with a big TV brand already established. It would also give them access into the state of Florida. The council has already discussed expanding to 20 teams.

Then you have the Big 12 who could look to snatch as many ACC teams as possible in order to create more of a nationwide presence. There’s no clarification on whether or not FSU will look to leave the ACC this season. We should have more details tomorrow after the Board of Trustees meet.
