Dan Lanning has already made history this season. He has the best recruiting class in program history. That doesn’t even include the transfers that will be making their way to Eugene or the recruits who are still trickling in. The coaches at Oregon have done an excellent job already but the job isn’t done yet. One of those recruits that it is trickling in later is DL Jericho Johnson.
Johnson announced his decision via social media on Thursday night.
Johnson, who is listed at 6’4″, 300 pounds chose the Ducks over Washington, USC and Utah. Oregon Defensive Coordinator Tosh Lupoi made one final push and the Ducks got the No. 22 ranked defensive lineman in the country.
As a senior in 2023, Johnson finished the season with 52 total tackles, 9 sacks, 9 tackles for loss and 2 pass breakups. He’ll join what will likely be recognized as the best defensive line haul in the country. He’ll join Aydin Breland, Xadavien Sims, Tionne Gray as standouts for the interior defensive line in the 2024 recruiting class. That group is accompanied by edge rushers Elijah Rushing and Jaxson Jones on the outside. The Ducks coaching staff has made recruitment in the trenches a priority in the 2024 class.
The Ducks have several veteran players graduating from their defensive line, so there will be an opportunity for young players to step up. Johnson has an uphill battle as an incoming freshman, but if he’s good enough he will have no problem getting playing time from Lanning’s staff.
Signing big-time recruits like Jericho Johnson sets the Ducks up for success in their first year in the BIG Ten. He’ll become the 26th recruit in the 2024 class for Oregon. Landing them firmly in the top five nationally along with the likes of Texas, Miami, Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia.
