The UCLA Bruins and Fresno State Bulldogs played an outstanding game on Saturday night. UCLA came into the game ranked No.13 in the country. Fresno State went into the game 2-1, with their only loss being a close to the Oregon Ducks 31-24.
Fresno State’s quarterback Jake Haener threw a touchdown pass with 14 seconds left to Jalen Cropper to give the Bulldogs the 40-37 victory. The Bulldogs led at half 23-10, but Oregon came back. Over the final seven minutes of the game, there were four lead changes. UCLA scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Fresno State scored 13.
Jake Haener Was Outstanding
When you pull off upsets, you need fantastic play from your quaterback, and Fresno State got that from Haener. The quarterback threw for 455 yards on 39 of 53 passing. Haener also threw two touchdowns and one interception.
Haener connected with Cropper 14 times for 141 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Also, Josh Kelly had eight catches for 120 yards. Haener was great under pressure.
“We know he’s tough, right. We’ve seen that over the course of last year and this year. He’s tough,” Fresno State coach Kalen DeBoer said. “When the pressure was great, he was at his best, and that’s what’s awesome.”
Dorian Thompson-Robinson Played Well
Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 14 of 24 of his passes for 278 yards while throwing three touchdowns. Also, Thompson-Robinson rushed 67 yards on 13 carries. Like Fresno State, UCLA had two receivers go 100 yards receiving. Kyle Phillips caught seven passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Kam Brown caught five passes for 11 yards and one touchdown.
Time Of Possession
Fresno State did a great job shortening the game with the time of possession. The Bulldogs had the ball for 40 minutes and 20 seconds, while the Bruins had it for 19 minutes and 40 seconds. Fresno State was able to control the ball by getting 32 first downs and keeping drives going.
Defense
The Bulldogs had 569 total yards, and the Bruins had 395 total yards; both defenses struggled, with Fresno State having the ball for 40 minutes, UCLA’s defense had to be tired. There were five total turnovers, both teams lost two fumbles, and UCLA intercepted a pass from Haener.
