The University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners won their very first bowl game in their home state of Texas in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl. It was an historic last ride for a group of UTSA seniors that delivered back-to-back conference championships for the school. The Frisco Bowl also featured the sons of two former NFL quarterbacks leading their teams in the college football postseason.
Backup Quarterback to the Rescue
UTSA starting quarterback Frank Wilson was injured in the team’s final regular season game against Tulane. It was believed he would be back for the bowl game against Marshall, but that would not be the case. Owen McCown, the son of journeyman NFL quarterback Josh McCown, stepped behind center to deliver for the Roadrunners. McCown completed 22 of 31 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns while leading UTSA to the 35-17 victory. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for McCown though as he struggled early, throwing two interceptions that helped Marshall build a 14-0 lead before leading the comeback. However, the Colorado transfer looks to be settling in nicely in San Antonio.
Another QB’s Son on the Other Side
UTSA wasn’t the only team with the son of a former NFL quarterback leading the offense. Cole Pennington, son of Chad Pennington, led the Thundering Herd to the Frisco Bowl. In the final game of the season, Pennington 15 of 33 passes for 258 yards. Unlike McCown, Pennington avoided throwing interceptions, but he never found the end zone on a pass either. Pennington was victimized by the Roadrunner defense, however, as UTSA sacked him six times. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next for Pennington and the Marshall Thundering Herd. The loss is tough for the Sunbelt Conference who came into the bowl season claiming to be the toughest of the Group of Five conferences but has dropped four of five bowls they’ve played in, so far.
