Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is being suspended two games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy.
The 32-year-old quarterback signed a three-year $72.5 million contract with Las Vegas last offseason. Garoppolo spent the first nine years of his career in New England and San Francisco before signing his lucrative deal with Las Vegas.
Garoppolo managed to start only six games for the Raiders. He went 3-3, completing 65.1% of his passes, with seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Due to injuries and lack of offensive production, the Raiders benched Garoppolo. This opened up the starting job for rookie Aiden O’Conell who started the last half of the season.
O’Connell threw for 2,218 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The Raiders went 5-5 with O’Connell as the starter. Currently, O’Connell and Brian Hoyer are the only two quarterback on the Raiders roster. The Raiders could be in the market to bring in a quarterback during free agency or even trade up to draft a QB in April.
It’s rare that the league suspends a quarterback for PED violations. The NFL banned New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Jake Haener for 6 games last fall, but before that, the league had not suspended a quarterback for PEDs since Mark Sanchez in 2018. Garoppolo will not appeal the suspension.
