Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the Los Angeles Rams have agreed to terms on a one-year contract On Friday, March 15. The former second-round pick for the New England Patriots has also played for the Raiders and 49ers. Garoppolo will now be joining his fourth franchise in the NFL.

Reason for Garoppolo’s release

Prior to the 2023 season, the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.75 million contract. However, amid his rocky start to his Raiders career, he lost the starting job to Aidan O’Connell after only six weeks. In those six weeks, Garoppolo won only three games. He threw for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also posted a career-low passer rating of 77.7. This resulted in the Raiders releasing Garoppolo after only one season. This was one of the Raiders first moves to start the 2024 season. This move from the Raiders frees up $11.25 million in cap space this season.

Jimmy Garoppolo was not the only player to be released by the Raiders on day one of the 2024 season. Fellow quarterback Brian Hoyer, wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, and Jerry Tillery were also released on Wednesday. These moves free up a total of $21.8 million in cap space for the Raiders.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s career so far

Over his ten-year NFL career, Garoppolo has accumulated 15,494 passing yards, 94 touchdowns, and 51 interceptions. He has also posted a career completion percentage of 67.4%, as well as a career passer rating of 97.6. His record as a starting quarterback over his career is 43-20.

Garoppolo will start the season with a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. This stems from Garoppolo using a prescribed medication without having a valid therapeutic use exemption. However, this suspension will not be of much importance for the Rams as Garoppolo is not expected to be the starter for the 2024 season.

It is expected that Garoppolo has signed to be the backup for the Rams. It is unlikely that Garoppolo will compete with Mathew Stafford for the starting job in 2024.
