Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux will miss the entirety of the 2023 MLB season, manager Dave Roberts announced Tuesday.

The injury occurred yesterday in the Dodgers’ spring training game against the San Diego Padres. Lux was running toward third base and awkwardly stepped, which caused his knee to buckle. He remained down next to third base for an extended period of time, clutching his right knee. Lux, was then carted off the field and underwent MRIs to determine the severity of the injury, which has now confirmed the worst outcome.

Gavin Lux, 25, was a former top prospect who solidified a role for himself in the everyday lineup.

Moreover, in 2022, Lux slashed .276/.346/.399 with 116 hits, six home runs, and 42 RBI.

For the Dodgers, they are once again scrambling for a replacement at the shortstop position. All-Star Trea Turner departed in free agency, leading them to shift Lux from second base to shortstop.

Additionally, the team could turn to Miguel Rojas, who was acquired via trade with the Miami Marlins. Rojas, 34 years old, served as a utility player for the Marlins.

“It’s unfortunate what happened to Luxy,” said Rojas. “But if that means me playing shortstop, that’s what I need to do. I prepared for this opportunity. I need to be ready for it.”

Furthermore, the Dodgers have time to explore their options as Opening Day is still a month away. Their first game of the regular season is on Thursday, March 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
