The Giants have finally hired Joe Schoen as the new general manager. He now leads the charge of fixing a sunken franchise of the NFL for the past five years.

Now former Bills’ assistant GM Schoen, 42, survived a nine-man candidate pool, beating two other finalists, Adam Peters and Ryan Poles. If Schoen can find the solution of what made the Bills great then it could be the move that will be praised for years to come. Co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch made this decision in hopes that their team can win again.

Now that the Giants have a GM, Schoen’s focus should immediately be on the head coaching position. There’s no time for celebration just yet.

The natural feeling is to link Schoen to Bills’ offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. He could be at the top of the list for Schoen. Daboll has found tremendous success with the Bills offense, helping Josh Allen become an MVP-caliber quarterback. He also attracted interest from other teams like the Bears and Dolphins.

Before hiring Schoen, the Giants requested permission to interview Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores.

Schoen replaces Dave Gettleman, who had a record of 19-46 in four years as Giants GM, resulting in his “retirement.” Mara said the new GM will “oversee all aspects of our football operations, including player personnel, college scouting, and coaching.” The amount of authority given to Schoen is not common within the Giants organization, but the circumstances the team has fallen into requires this drastic change. The old way of doing things has not worked for Giants since they won their last Super Bowl.

Schoen is the first Giants general manager with no ties with the team since 1979, when George Young arrived and saved the team. Young ended a 17-year playoff drought which led to two Super Bowl championships. Schoen was the first to be interviewed, first to have a second interview, and was the last man standing.

The duo of Schoen and Bills’ GM Brandon Beane helped the Bills break a 17-year playoff drought and built a powerhouse contender every year. In Buffalo, Schoen worked with personnel, analytics, communications and football operations.

It will be up to Schoen to lead the Giants out of the bottom and back to the top.
