Gino Odjick, who formerly played with the Vancouver Canucks between 1990 to 1998, has died at the age of 52. The news of Gino’s passing was initially announced on Facebook by Dina Odjick, Gino’s sister. “Our hearts are broken. My brother Gino Odjick has left us for the spirit world.”

History of Odjick

Overall in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected Odjick 86th. Odjick played 605 games in 12 NHL seasons, spending eight of those with the Vancouver Canucks and four each with the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, and Montreal Canadiens. He was a crowd favorite in the league. Odjick had a career-high 29 points and 16 goals in 1993-94.

Odjick was born in the Kitigan Zibi Algonquin Reserve, located outside Maniwaki, Quebec. In 2014, he was diagnosed with AL Amyloidosis. A rare disease in which the heart becomes unable to function due to protein deposits on its surface.

Quotes About Odjick

Canucks chairman and governor Franceso Aquillini say a couple of words. “Gino was a fan-favorite from the moment he joined the organization, putting his heart and soul into every shift on and off the ice. Personally, he was a close friend and confidant, someone I could lean on for advice and support.”

Also, Vice-President Hockey Operations Stan Smyl mentions kind words. “The role that he was as a player is one of the hardest roles to play in hockey. It’s a role that you, as a player, know when you have to be the tough guy and support your teammates, and he was always there for that. He could bring the team into a fight just by being Gino in the way he was sometimes, so yeah, he was one of the greatest teammates that I played with.”
