The hype around Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant is real. Ever since his dominant performance in the 2019 NCAA tournament with Murray State, Morant has put the world on watch. The Racers were the #12 seed taking on Markus Howard and the #5 seeded Marquette Golden Eagles. In the first-round matchup, Morant dropped 17 points, 16 assists, and 11 rebounds. Morant even made a highlight reel dunk that is now known as the famous “Ja Jam.”

Morant has many qualities that an athlete wishes to have. In his rookie combine, he recorded a 44-inch vertical. The average NBA vertical is 28 inches… He is quick, and has the explosiveness and drive like no other.

In his rookie campaign, Morant averaged 17.8 points, 7.3 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in 67 games. Rightfully so, he earned the rookie of the year award. Making him the first Grizzlies player to do so since Pau Gasol won the award in 2001-02.

Morant took it up a notch his sophomore season, averaging 19.7 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.0 rebounds. His performance helped the Grizzlies clinch a playoff spot where they were later eliminated in the first round by the Utah Jazz in five games.

Morant’s third season is really when his game took off. In 57 games played, he averaged 27.4 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.7 rebounds. Again, leading the Grizzlies to the postseason where they survived a little bit longer this time. The Grizzlies earned the #2 seed and routed the Timberwolves in six games. Moving on to the next round, the Grizzlies took the Warriors to six games where they eventually fell short.

Due to his performance in the 2021-22 season, Morant earned a spot in his first-ever all-star game. The style and way Morant plays prove that he can compete at the highest level and he has gained nothing but respect from players, fans, and analysts around the world.

Three-time NBA all-star, Donovan Mitchell, averaged 24 points in his third season. Six-time NBA all-star, Damian Lillard averaged 21 points in his third year. Also, two-time NBA MVP, and six-time NBA all-star, Giannis Antetokounmpo averaged 16.9 points in his third go-around. The point is, Morant has put up better stats than these all-star players.

Here in the 2022-23 season, through four games Ja Morant is averaging 35.3 points. As of October 26, 2022, Morant is leading the NBA in points per game. Notable names behind him are Luka Doncic (34.7), Donovan Mitchell (33.3), and Damian Lillard (33.3). Looking at stats and comparisons, is Morant making a case for the best current player in the NBA?
