With Paolo Banchero leading the way, the Orlando Magic have done an outstanding job building through the NBA Draft. They have numerous young talents who have become quality role players at the playoff level. Amongst these talents is Jalen Suggs, an elite defender who deserves more credit for his efforts on both sides of the ball.

Following the 2021 draft, Suggs entered Orlando’s rebuild as one of the foundational pieces. He was unstoppable as a one-and-done prospect with Gonzaga, and the Magic showed no hesitation with the fifth overall pick. They were certain Suggs would prosper against the best competition worldwide.

Over the last three seasons, Suggs has built a reputation for locking down defensively. He is persistent in his craft, and some of the league’s best scorers encounter trouble when trying to score on him. This task is challenging, yet fans often overlook Suggs’ efforts for the star-powered Magic.

Jalen Suggs is a third option on the playoff-contending Orlando Magic.

Along with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, the Orlando Magic look to Jalen Suggs when they need a spark in crunch time. He has transformed into a phenomenal three-point shooter with a strong IQ and awareness.

Last season, the former Gonzaga Bulldog averaged 12.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 75 games for Orlando. More importantly, in just 27 minutes per game, Suggs’ defensive prowess coerced executives into honoring him on the NBA’s All-Defensive second team.

As a restricted free agent next summer, Suggs is working to earn a long-term extension with Orlando. If he continues to dominate and remain healthy, the front office will have no choice but to offer Suggs $30 million annually.

Nonetheless, Suggs is a significant part of what the Magic have accomplished. He helped the front office boost the rebuilding process, making life easier for Banchero and Wagner on both ends of the court. If Orlando finishes in the top three, Suggs will likely conclude as a Defensive Player of the Year finalist.
