“Oh Mama!” The 2024 season will be a little different for the San Antonio Spurs. Amidst, his ongoing cancer battle longtime Spurs broadcaster Bill Land has announced his retirement.
“I am grateful and appreciative for the support from the entire Spurs organization as well as FOX Sports/Bally Sports,” said Land. “I feel truly blessed to have had a dream job with the best production crew in the league and the best analyst in the NBA, Sean Elliott. As I move into the fourth quarter of my life, I want to thank everyone, especially Spurs fans, for their incredible support over the years and particularly this past year as I have battled cancer.”
Bill Land joined the Spurs broadcast in 1990 as a fill-in announcer. In 2003, he transitioned to a more prominent role and in 2008 he became the play-by-play announcer. A role that he has held since. Land underwent a procedure on a stem cell transplant last summer and announced that he had blood cancer. Dan Weiss began joining Sean Elliott on Spurs road trips, allowing Land time for treatment and recovery.
“Congrats to my friend Bill Land on his retirement,” Weiss stated on social media. “A heck of a run! 50 years in broadcasting is hall of fame level stuff! I’ve appreciated our chats for the last 15 years. He leaves a legacy of being the voice of the most successful franchise in sports for the past 2 decades.”
We would like to congratulate Land on a hall of fame broadcasting career. We wish him the best with his cancer battle and hope that he beats it. The Spurs plan to honor Land in their first home game of the 2024 season.
