The Los Angeles Rams are in the process of shedding salaries. Bobby Wagner was the first cap casualty earlier this week. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, now a Jalen Ramsey trade may be brewing.
Ramsey sent a tweet in January that made it seem like his tenure with the team might be over. Ramsey is still one of the best corners in football. However, the Rams would save $5.6 million if they traded him, and add valuable draft picks as well. To save the most money, a Ramsey trade is likely coming before March 20, as if he is still on the Rams’ roster on that date, he receives $7.5 million guaranteed.
Ramsey will probably be traded to a contending team that has cap space. A team that would unquestionably make a lot of sense is the Cincinnati Bengals. The team needs a cornerback and would love to get Joe Burrow back to the Super Bowl. Additionally, the Detroit Lions may have an interest in a Ramsey trade. While they are not considered true contenders, the offense performed quite well last season. The defense is the big question mark, and the addition of Ramsey would likely help to answer it.
For what it’s worth, however, Ramsey has pushed back against Pelissero’s report. His online activity is well-known, and today has certainly been no exception:
In any case, more moves are on the horizon for Los Angeles. Despite the subtraction of Wagner and Ramsey from the squad, the Rams would still remain above the cap. Their famous gamble to sacrifice first-round picks and cap space to chase a ring paid off via a Super Bowl LVII victory, but the rebuild has now arrived. It will be interesting to see how the Rams attempt to stay competitive while maneuvering around the salary cap.
