The Oakland A’s and NBC Sports California announced this morning that they are hiring Jenny Cavnar to become the first female lead play-by-play commentator in major league history.

Cavnar had been working with AT&T Sportsnet for the Colorado Rockies as a backup play-by-play announcer for about 12 years. Additionally, she did pre and postgame, as well as some sideline reporting for regional Rockies games. Cavnar also spent some time covering the San Diego Padres from 2007-11. She won Colorado Sportscaster of the Year in 2021, becoming the first woman to ever win the award.

Cavnar’s experience goes as far back as 2001 when she did sports reporting for iHeartMedia. She also worked in hockey for the Anaheim Ducks, and in men’s and women’s college basketball for FS1 and Pac 12 networks. Cavnar even worked as a co-host on the leadup to the Sochi winter Olympics in 2014. She is very well versed and will do great as the first female lead host in MLB commentary history.

Former Oakland pitcher and current analyst for NBC Sports California, Dallas Braden, had words of encouragement for his new co-worker…

Cavnar also had words of her own to speak on the matter.

“It is a dream come true to join the broadcast team for the Oakland A’s,” Cavnar said. “Growing up the daughter of a baseball coach, I have loved the game from a young age, along with the stories, history and relationships the game provides. I’m excited to start my 18th season as a major league broadcaster with my good friend, Dallas Braden.”

While the Oakland Athletics may not be the most competitive team in the MLB currently, this news gives us baseball fans a reason to turn on an A’s game. With reports coming recently that the team’s move to Las Vegas is anything but settled, Oakland fans are beginning to wonder if the tides are starting to turn in their favor. Whatever the case, this news is certainly a win for the A’s.
