Jerami Grant Staying Focused Despite Trade Rumors

One of the biggest and most popular names on the trade market has been the Blazers’ Jerami Grant. With Pascal Siakam, now off the board. That market could start to heat up as Grant and Kyle Kuzma become the next best power forwards that might be available.

In three weeks, there’s a possibility that Grant could be sporting a new uniform. You can definitely see why it would make sense for the Blazers to trade Jerami Grant. Based on the common belief, a rebuilding roster doesn’t keep anyone above 25. The belief is that the Blazers should trade players like Malcolm Brogdon and Grant. However, Joe Cronin and the Blazers Front Office may not see it that way.

We have seen how disastrous it can be for a rebuilding team to be missing leadership. Look at the disastrous season that the 4-37 Detroit Pistons have had for example. Though, they are aware that the calls may come. The Blazers are not focused on trading Grant and he’s not focusing on the rumors. However, if they are blown away by the trade market for Jerami Grant they may explore the options.

“You definitely see it,” Grant told Sean Highkin after the win over the Nets. “But it’s not anything in my control. I’m cool here. I’m good with what I’m doing. Keep my head down and keep working, keep trying to help the young guys as much as I can. But it’s definitely something you see. It’s not something you can do anything about, especially since I just signed a deal. I’m here for as long as they want me.”

Keeping Grant on the roster was supposed to be just the first piece to be building a championship-caliber roster around Damian Lillard. Though somewhere, the Blazers decided that they weren’t going to or wouldn’t be able to. After waiting for so long, that’s when Lillard had asked for a trade. Later in the offseason, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks but the Blazers have kept veterans on the roster to help mentor the young guys in the post-Lillard era.

If Grant is willing to stay around through the end of the rebuild, it could pay huge dividends for the Blazers roster. Not only would they have a leader, but they’d have a forward already in their prime already on the roster. Grant, 29, is averaging 21.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the Blazers this season. He’s the second-leading scorer behind Anfernee Simons.
