The Fit In Cleveland
This past season the Cleveland Browns were mediocre on defense. They finished 15th in the league for yards allowed. As well they were 20th in scoring defense in the NFL. Above all, the bright spot on the defense was that it was top ten in pass defense in all categories. Schwartz will look to correct those areas and help unlock the potential of this team. Under the new defensive coordinator, the priority will be on rebuilding the front four. He will look to pressure the quarterback using his four-down lineman. Behind that, the defensive backs will play more man coverage on the outside and utilize zone coverage in the middle of the field.
Jim Schwartz will bring stability and the veteran presence this defense needs the most. He will bring a wide-nine scheme that fits the defensive pieces already in place. This hire will positively impact Myles Garrett and the other defensive linemen brought in. In addition, this move will elevate Denzel Ward and the other corners on this team. Those players will be enhanced by playing more man coverage which fits their play style more naturally. This was a great hire and it will help the defense and the team overall.
