On Monday, Joel Embiid put on an unforgettable performance setting a franchise-record 70 points. This is the most a player has scored in the NBA this season. Embiid led Philadelphia to a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Embiid went 24 of 41 from the field including 1 of 2 from 3-point range, and made 21 of 23 free throws. He also set his career high for rebounds with 18 on the night. Wilt Chamberlain previously held the 76ers record with 68 points, set in 1967, which Embiid broke with 1:41 to play.

The current MVP front-runner tied his career high of 59 points through three quarters and eventually reentered the game with 6:38 left in the fourth while the 76ers were up by 14. Embiid went on to score 11 more points.

Embiid who is the reigning MVP and six-time All-Star has scored at least 30 points in 21 consecutive games. After the game, Embiid said it was “great” to be in the same conversation as Wilt Chamberlain. Embiid is now the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 points in a game.

Karl-Anthony Towns came close to matching Embiid’s incredible performance on the night. Towns set a Timberwolves record with 62 points in a loss to the Charlotte Hornets. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Embiid and Towns became the first duo of NBA players to score at least 60 points in the same day since David Thompson (73) and George Gervin (63), who did so in 1978.

With Joel Embiid setting the franchise record Monday night this now puts him at the highest per-minute scoring average in NBA history.  Embiid is averaging 36.1 points in just 34.3 minutes, a rate of 38.0 per 36. The previous record was held by Wilt Chamberlain who averaged 37.4 points per 36.
