Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has suffered a torn meniscus injury. A treatment plan is being finalized, and Embiid will remain out through the weekend.

Embiid has been an MVP front-runner this season averaging 35 points per game and 11 rebounds.

While the 76ers specialists have yet to determine a treatment plan a surgical procedure on the meniscus likely would sideline Embiid for a few months. If Embiid takes the non-surgical route it would likely cause him to miss 6-8 weeks.

Joel Embiid has been dealing with knee soreness this season before suffering a torn meniscus. He reinjured his left knee in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 119-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors. The injury occurred with 4:04 left in the game as Embiid faced a double team. After Warriors’ Jonathon Kuminga poked the ball away, Embiid fell to grab it, and Kuminga fell on his knee.

The Sixers center went to the locker room and was in visible pain. Embiid eventually got up and limped to the locker room. Embiid finished with 14 points on 5-of-18 shooting to go with 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Sixers have already ruled Embiid out for Thursday night’s game in Utah. This will be the 13th game Embiid has missed this season. The NBA implemented a new player participation policy this season, stating that a player must not miss more than 17 games to be eligible for any NBA major honors.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Joel Embiid as an All-Star starter last week, and now he will have to replace him ahead of the game in Indianapolis in a little over two weeks.

Philadelphia has been dealing with numerous injuries this season. They will need Embiid back if they are going to make a playoff run.
