The 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones is headed to New York.

In a three-team deal expected to be finalized Sunday Night, the Connecticut Sun are sending Jones to the New York Liberty. Where she requested to be traded with a year left on her contract.

The Liberty already have a championship competitive team with Sabrina Ionescu leading the way. They also have historically tried to court two-time Finals MVP Breanna Stewart, who will be a free agent this year.

Jones – a 6-6 forward/center from the Bahamas – averaged 14.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game this past season, helping lead Connecticut to a second WNBA Finals berth in four years.

A season ago, the Liberty lost to the Chicago Sky in three games. Ionescu and Natasha Howard led the way for the Liberty with 22 points each in a game 1 upset, but the Liberty lost the next two games. While Jones’ Sun team made it to the WNBA finals. The Liberty will hope that the pairing of Jones and Ionescu can help them reach the championship.

Trade Details:

The Liberty will receive Jonquel Jones and Dallas Wings forward Kayla Thornton in the trade, said the IX editor Howard Megdal in a Sunday tweet. The Wings will take forward Natasha Howard and guard Crystal Dangerfield from the Liberty. The Connecticut Sun will take in the No. 6 pick from the Liberty, Liberty guard Rebecca Allen and Wings guard Tyasha Harris.

The trade has been made official. We will have more when soon.
