Jordan Davis has had all the eyes on him since the sugar bowl in 2021. In that game, he chased down Desmond Ridder for a sack and everyone watching was stunned (4:10). It’s normally not surprising to see a player from Georgia be able to sack a non power five quarterback. However, it will always be mesmerizing to watch a 6’6” 340 pound man chase down one of the more athletic QBs in college football; a potential NFL quarterback as well. Davis is a giant. Despite being so big, he was able to run a 4.78 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine!
Why the hype?
Davis is pretty much the ninth wonder of the world. His combine numbers back up that claim; 4.78 40 yard dash, 32” vertical jump, and a 132” broad jump. This man is an athletic freak. Just imagine what his bench press numbers are going to be. He is such a once in a lifetime prospect, even Kirby Smart was amazed.
“I’ve never had one like him,” Smart said. “Even Terrence Cody [at Alabama] was different. Cody had a sloppier body, but Jordan doesn’t have a lot of body fat. He’s 6-6, and we tell him that if he’s in the 340s, he’s dangerous.”
Davis played a very pivotal role in the Georgia Bulldogs winning the national championship this year. With Davis being so massive, teams had no choice but to double team Davis. If you left Davis one on one with the center, your quarterback would have died. Everyone being so focused on Davis helped players like Trayvon Walker and Devonte Wyatt to have insane amounts of success. Keep in mind that Davis is much more than someone who eats blocks. In the run game Davis is able to use his strong hands to push the linemen off him and get to the ball carrier. In the pass game Davis disrupts the pocket. There’s not a lot of centers in the world who can push Davis backwards, let alone centers in college football. Because of this, Davis just pushes the center backwards and backwards; causing the pocket to move.
Davis finished this season with 32 tackles, five tackles for a loss, and two sacks. He finished his college career with 90 tackles, 11.5 for a loss, and seven sacks. Davis is someone who can be a monster on the defensive line. Davis may not have the most eye popping numbers, but he has some eye popping stats. One perfect example is his combine. But, we need to realize that Davis is more than an athletic freak. This guy can play football. In late October, Davis had played 155 snaps and the defense had only allowed four 20+ yard plays while he was on the field! Even crazier, offenses would average just 2.72 yards per play when Davis was on the field! One of college football’s greatest defenses, 2011 Alabama, allowed 3.32 yards per play.
Where could Davis get drafted?
Davis is going to be a day one starter for whatever team decides to take him. Trust me, there’s a lot of teams that will want this man, especially with how weak the DT class is. The first team that may take Davis is the Cleveland Browns. The Browns would have the scariest defensive line in all of football if they took Davis. No offensive line in the entire league is stopping the trio of Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney, and Davis. Three athletic freaks that all need to be double teams. This would not only make their defense amazing, but it would bring so much pressure off of Baker Mayfield and the Browns offense.
Another option for Davis is the pick right after the Browns, the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens were below average at getting to the quarterback last year. Star defensive end Calais Campbell is a free agent this year. He’s already aging, and the rest of the defensive line already isn’t that great. Sticking in a player like Davis helps them tremendously. They have a real threat who can make plays and create chances for his teammates to make plays.
Davis is someone who will have so much hype on draft day; rightfully so. He is a freak of nature and is truly one of a kind. If he gets his cardio together and is drafted to the right team for him, then he’ll be the next monster of the NFL. I’m not sure if the NFL has ever had a prospect like Davis. It’s virtually impossible to find a 340 pound man that is as strong and quick as Davis.
