Justin Verlander has been one of, if not, the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball for the better half of two decades. Though, like many pitchers, his first two starts in Major League Baseball didn’t go the way he planned. He finished the 2005 campaign with a 7.15 ERA across 11 innings. Though the next season he started making a name for himself and he has not slowed down since 2006.
When Verlander went down with Tommy John surgery, many were unsure of how he would do with his age. At the age of 39, it’s safe to say he responded positively and continued his craft as he pitched his way to his second AL Cy Young award. The nine-time all-star went 18-4 with a 1.75 ERA across 175 innings.
How much does Justin Verlander have left in the tank?
This may be the biggest question that will be answered over the next few years, but as of now, Verlander has not shown any signs of aging in performance. This late in his career he may not have too many great years left, but as of now, the three-time CY Young winner will heading east, and pitching in a New York Mets jersey.
He will be coming off one of his best years and his second championship with the Astros.
The contract is reportedly for 2 years and is worth $86 million, with a vesting option for a third year. There is a full no-trade clause in the deal/ Not only have the Mets solidified their rotation more than it already was but they have reunited Max Scherzer and Verlander, who were teammates in Detroit from 2010-2014.
