COPE’s Melchior Ruiz reports that Real Madrid captain, Karim Benzema, is currently a doubt for Saturday’s La Liga fixture against Espanyol. The French Striker has been sidelined on numerous occasions so far this season. Mostly through injuries while some of his absence was due to fatigue. These injuries may be a surprise to the club but it definitely is a major concern going into the crucial stretch of the season.

Is he officially out of the match?

MARCA have reported that Benzema missed today’s training session. However, they claim that it’s nothing to worry about and that he should return to training either tomorrow or on Friday. This Espanyol game isn’t only important for the title race. It’s also important to build momentum and confidence going into the second leg against Liverpool. 

The Reds must score four goals without reply in order to qualify after losing the first leg in embarrassing fashion. They recently put seven past Manchester United which shows that they’re capable of punishing a lackluster defense. Many may say that this tie is over, but it’s important that Real Madrid players coaching staff approach the game with the same respect as the first leg.

Karim Benzema is crucial to Ancelotti’s system and he’ll be a key figure next Wednesday.

Who will take Benzema’s place if he is out?

Rodrygo is Benzema’s natural replacement in the lineup. They have similar attributes and both can offer many solutions in the final third. Alternatively, Alvaro Rodríguez may be granted his first start in the first team. He has shown his ability, passion and fearlessness each time he stepped on to the pitch. It’s unlikely, but it’s definitely a possibility. 

All in all, Benzema’s consistent injuries is down to his lack of rest due to poor squad planning from the club. A striker must be brought in during the summer transfer window.
