What was your best memory as a 15 year old? Whatever it was, I think Katie Grimes has you beat. Grimes is going to Tokyo as part of Team USA swimming. She finished in second place behind Katie Ledecky in the 800 meter freestyle to lock up her spot on the roster. After finishing six seconds behind Ledecky, she didn’t realize what just happened. When the moment set in and Ledecky came over to congratulate her, priceless.

Who the heck is Katie Grimes?

Hey, I was asking myself the same thing. We don’t have much, but here is what we know. Grimes is from Las Vegas where she swims for the Sandpipers of Nevada swimming club. Her club, and now Olympic, teammate Bella Sims, who swam next to her, was the first to congratulate her. Grimes has won bronze medals in the 200 meter backstroke, 400 meter freestyle, 1500 meter freestyle, and the 400 meter individual medley at the 2019 Southern California 14 & under Junior Olympic Championship. She also one the bronze medal in the 1500 freestyle at the 2018 Wester Zone Senior Championships. She will now make the jump to major international competition, and it doesn’t get any bigger than the Olympic stage.

Grimes joins a different looking field than we have come accustomed to the last few Olympics. She also becomes the youngest swimmer to make the team since Ledecky did it as a 16-year-old in 2012. With some major names not on the roster this time around, Grimes will look to make a name for herself. Ledecky once called Grimes the future, and after qualifying, Ledecky called her “the now”. Team USA will look to continue their dominance in Olympic swimming.
