Kenley Jansen Not The Same Since Returning From IL
The career of Kenley Jansen has, to this point, been near Hall of Fame worthy. He currently ranks ninth in career saves. In 2020 he helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win their first World Series in 32 years.
Jansen’s heart issues stretch all the way back to the 2011. He had surgery due to an irregular heartbeat in 2012 and 2018. In June Atlanta placed him on the injured list when it happened again. Since coming back Jansen has almost as many blown saves in eight fewer opportunities before being put on the IL. His WHIP and ERA are also very concerning.
Iglesias An Excellent Option To Close For Atlanta
At the trade deadline the Braves acquired Raisel Iglesias from the Los Angeles Angels. Iglesias’ year with the Angels mirrored the teams. Since coming to the Braves he has only given up one earned run.
With Jansen’s issues Iglesias makes the most sense to replace him. His performance and experience make it clear that he is capable of filling the role. The question is why has he not taken over as closer?
Snitker’s Loyalty A Double-Edged Sword
This year’s issue with the closer feel similar to last years. There was some thought that Will Smith, who was then the Braves closer, tipped his pitches. Whatever the reason at this point in the season there were calls for him to be replaced.
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker stuck with Smith. Atlanta won the World Series. Now Snitker refuses to take Jansen out and insert Iglesias as the guy at the end of games. If he’s wrong it could cost the team a chance to defend their title. Snitker being right again would make him look like a wizard. Loyalty can be a double edged sword, and the Braves season, in large part, lies in the balance.

[…] Ummm…yeah, this article missed the mark. Kenley Jansen, and the rest of Atlanta’s bullpen, proved a key part of the Braves sweep of the New York Mets this weekend. Brian Snitker‘s job of managing the in playoffs has to feel easier seeing Jansen regain his form. He struggled in the first game of the series, loading bases with one out, before striking out the last two hitters. His last two nights, both clean saves, prove he deserves to remain Atlanta’s closer. […]
