Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James made history Thursday, becoming the first NBA player to reach 20 All-Star selections. James, who will serve as the captain for the Western Conference, surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 19 career All-Star selections for the most all-time. He has been an All-Star every season since 2005.
“I give credit and a lot of respect to my fans who have been along with me through this whole 21-year journey,” James said after the Lakers defeated the Chicago Bulls 141-132 Thursday. “And voting me in as an All-Star starter for the 20th-consecutive time, just very humbled. Very blessed to be able to do what I love to do and just try to give back, give back to the game that’s given me over two decades. So, to be able to know this is the first time ever in NBA history to have this many All-Star starts or whatever the case might be, it’s very cool.”
James is averaging 24.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game in his 21st season in the league.
The 2024 NBA All-Star Game Starters
Phoenix Suns’ Kevin Durant, Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic, Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic, and Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will join LeBron James as Western Conference starters for the All-Star Game. In the Eastern Conference, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will be the captain in his eighth All-Star appearance. He will be joined by teammate Damian Lillard, Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid, Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, and Indiana Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton.
The league selects the starters through a fan vote (50%), a player vote (25%), and a media members panel (25%). NBA coaches will select the All-Star reserves, which the league will announce on Feb. 1.
The All-Star Game takes place on Feb. 18 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, the home of the Indiana Pacers. This year’s edition will see the return of the traditional East versus West format.
