Welcome to the recap of Jornada 8 in Liga MX and preview for Jornada 9. It was an interesting weekend with more scoring than the previous matchday and some surprising results. Let’s get started with the results and recap!

Jornada 8 Recap

Puebla 2 – 2 Atletico San Luis
Juarez 2 – 1 Cruz Azul
Tijuana 2 – 1 Santos Laguna
Atlas 2 – 1 Monterrey
Tigres 2 – 2 Leon
Club America 2 – 0 Mazatlan
Pumas 0 – 0 Chivas
Queretaro 3 – 0 Necaxa
Pachuca 1 – 2 Toluca

Here is the current table.

Game of the Week

Tigres and Leon played to a 2-2 draw and the action did not disappoint! Leon controlled the game early and scored two goals within a few minutes of each other. Elias Hernandez was left unmarked at the back post after a corner was deflected via header to him from the near post. Minutes later, Angel Mena was given too much space and finished nicely. Minutes after that, Angel Mena missed a penalty wide to the right. That would come back to haunt Leon. Raymundo Fulgencio scored for Tigres just minutes later before the half. Tigres pushed in the second half, and Luis Quiñones scored in added time to equalize. It was a very entertaining match.

Juarez and Tijuana picked up their first wins of the season and in surprising fashion. Juarez conceded a goal just five minutes into the match to Cruz Azul but scored twice before the half and held on. Tijuana led for a long stretch, then they conceded late but scored a penalty at the death of the match to defeat Santos Laguna. Those results were surprising because Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul are title contenders and the finalists from last season. Atlas picked up a win over a very talented Monterrey squad. Queretaro picked up their first win and scored three goals when they had only scored one in their first seven games.

Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna both lost to teams at or near the bottom of the table. Cruz Azul led early but quickly lost that lead. Santos Laguna has a nasty habit of conceding late in games. Monterrey led in Guadalajara and managed to lose it to Atlas. Monterrey has a very talented squad and is underperforming. Necaxa lost and conceded three goals to a team that struggled to score in Queretaro.

Games to Watch

There are two games that stand out as must-watch. One is the match between first and second place Toluca and America. I’m looking forward to seeing how well Toluca is able to attack America. The other game is the Clasico Regio between Monterrey and Tigres. Both teams have a lot of talent and high-wage players but aren’t performing at the highest level right now.

We’ll be back next week with a Liga MX recap for Jornada 9 and a preview for Jornada 10.
