Liverpool took on Manchester United at home in the Premier League’s most highly anticipated matchup of the game week. The ultimate Super Sunday showdown, the England derby, the rivalry lasted throughout history.

Pre-match situation

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have been far from consistent this season. They dropped to ninth on the table at one point in the season. But in recent games, things have been looking great for them. They are on an unbeaten run in the Premier League, including a statement win against Newcastle United. Concerns are still there, but some good flash has been shown. Liverpool wouldn’t have the service of Thiago, Joe Gomez, and Naby Keita in this match.

Meanwhile, Manchester United is having quite a contradicting season. Under Erik Ten Hag, they are flying in all competitions and just came off a Carabao Cup final win. Almost every player is in fine form, with Marcus Rashford being the world’s brightest star. Besides Christian Eriksen‘s and Donny van de Beek‘s season-ending injuries, Manchester United would have the best players available.

Match (massacre) summary

First half

With home-field advantage, Liverpool pushed the tempo immediately after the opening whistle. But the best chances in the first 30 minutes belonged to the away team, with shots from Antony and Marcus Rashford. The turning point came in the 43rd minute when newcomer Cody Gakpo beautifully cut inside and placed the ball in the bottom right corner to open the scoreline. Little did players or fans know this was the beginning of destruction. Liverpool went into the half with a narrow 1-0 lead.

Second half

It was a close first half, but the game went in another direction after the first five minutes of the second half. Darwin Nunez headed the ball from point-blank range following Harvey Elliott‘s cross. Three minutes later, Mohammed Salah sent Lisandro Martinez searching for ghosts in a one-on-one before poking the ball through to Cody Gakpo to finish his brace.

Manchester United was shellshocked and was unable to respond. The backline continued to miscommunicate, leading to Mohammed Salah smashing the ball into the top corner to extend the lead. After Gakpo, it was Darwin Nunez’s turn to finish his brace. Following a cross from the left flank from captain Jordan Henderson, Nunez rose above every defender to head another one in.

The Egyptian King continued a brilliant individual game. After a messy scramble inside the box, he found the ball and tucked it in to complete his brace. And minutes before the game ended, Roberto Firmino put the cherry on top of an emphatic victory with a tight-angled shot. An emotional goal for Firmino and The Reds fans as he recently announced his departure at the end of the season.

The match ended with a shocking 7-0 scoreline favoring Liverpool.

A horrendous defensive performance from the Manchester United defense. The players on the pitch today for them were the best options but couldn’t match the expectation. Losing so quickly and early into the second half pulled the whole United team down mentally. There is work for Ten Hag to do after this embarrassing loss – the biggest loss against Liverpool in history. But Manchester United is still a formidable team, and they can bounce back after this loss.

Today was an absolute masterclass from Jurgen Klopp. He directed the player to go all in from the beginning, leaving the opponent no time to respond. Plus, the attacks have been playing phenomenally in recent games, and four grabbed at least a goal in this game. Mohammed Salah’s two goals and two assists made him the only Premier League player with double-digit goals and double-digit assists in all competitions this year. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson were outstanding not only offensively but also defensively. The way Trent bagged Rashford gives Liverpool fans hope, which they will dearly need against Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16’s second leg.

The result of this game pushes the winner into the top five and leaves the loser straying further from the top of the table. The Premier League title race is unpredictable at this point… It is more interesting now. Liverpool joins the fun.
