Los Angeles Chargers and Justin Herbert

Since the end of the 2022 season, it has been downhill for the Chargers after blowing a 27-point lead in the AFC Wild Card to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Unfortunately, that bad luck continued into the 2023 season which led to only winning five games. The Los Angeles Chargers offseason will be tough as they look to improve. However, they seem to be making the right moves recently.

Coaching Upgrade

After the firing of Brandon Staley, the Chargers were easily the most attractive landing spot in the offseason as they have a franchise star quarterback Justin Herbert. The Chargers knew they could not get this hiring wrong after paying Herbert an extension last year so that they could keep their franchise quarterback for the first time since Philip Rivers.

The Chargers not only landed the “big fish” in Jim Harbaugh who is coming off a national championship with Michigan but they brought in a coach who loves quarterbacks and can develop them at an elite level. Pairing Harbaugh with a top-five quarterback in the league, the Chargers offense is going to be scary good.

In addition, Harbaugh isn’t just a coach who succeeded at the collegiate level and got an opportunity to coach at the pro level. Harbaugh was one of the most successful coaches in the NFL from 2011 to 2014 by leading the 49ers to three straight NFC Championships, one Super Bowl appearance, and a record of 44-19-1.

The Chargers went from bad luck after the playoff loss to immediate Super Bowl contenders.

NFL Draft Needs

The Chargers currently hold the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. With the biggest needs at Tight End and Offensive Line, LA can change the direction of the teams drafting behind them such as the Giants and the Titans. With the Center position not having a highly-rated prospect likely to go within the top 10, the Chargers can afford to draft one later.

LA can bolster their offense by drafting the best tight end in College Football Brock Bowers. He was a two-time John Mackey Award winner, with 2,538 receiving yards, and 26 touchdowns. Adding a player like Bowers into a Harbaugh offense alongside a quarterback like Herbert, the Chargers offense will be very hard to stop next year.

Free Agency

The 2024 NFL free agency has a lot of big names. Unfortunately, the Chargers will not be in play much this free agency due to their salary cap issues. Chargers have about negative 44 million dollars. In order to make a pretty decent move this offseason they will need to cut or trade some of their top players such as Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Mike Williams, and Keenan Allen.

Lastly as the 2023 NFL playoffs are coming to an end, the Los Angeles Chargers offseason is one that can make them stand out as contenders next year or build for the next two years.
