After performing exceptionally well in the regular season, the LA Clippers came up short when the pressure was highest. Franchise superstar Kawhi Leonard once again found himself on the injury report, and his co-star Paul George failed to carry his team forward. These factors could play a role heading into a crucial offseason. If a trade occurs, LA could take a chance on the one-time all-star, Dejounte Murray.
Although Murray faced a rough start to his NBA career, he has blossomed into one of the league’s most talented point guards. This development was rooted in his time spent in San Antonio, where he played with Leonard and was coached by Gregg Popovich.
After cementing his name as an all-star, Murray flipped the chapter and was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. Despite his ups and downs, Atlanta has shown signs of making him available. The Clippers could swoop in and make an unbeatable offer if they want to significantly change their roster.
Dejounte Murray could turn into a championship guard for the LA Clippers.
Dejounte Murray is one of the many stars in today’s league that do not receive enough credit. He has forged himself into an offensive machine who can finish strong with a seemingly unguardable midrange. Defenses find themselves in trouble trying to stay in front of Murray, backing up his improvements in scoring and efficiency.
Through 78 games this season, the former Washington Husky averaged 22.5 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.3 boards while shooting 45.9% from the field. Murray also shot 36.9% from three, where he attempted a career-high 7.1.
One of the concerns since Murray’s move to Atlanta has been his defense. While still respectable, Murray’s performance has regressed from his previous all-defensive level. This unexpected change has led to numerous breakdowns throughout the season, a factor that the Clippers should consider in their trade decision.
However, if traded to the Clippers, Murray’s expectations offensively will decrease with the help of Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. This will allow him to conserve energy defensively, filling a void for head coach Tyronn Lue.
As for the trade, the Clippers should sign Paul George and ship him to Atlanta. In return, LA should ask for Muray, Onyeka Okongwu, and draft compensation. This gives LA a level of depth they could use while providing the Hawks with a superstar talent to pair with Trae Young and the first overall pick.
