New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has been shopped to multiple teams this offseason, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
The 2021 first-round pick had a disappointing 2022 season with 2.997 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions compared to his rookie season with 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Jones led the Patriots to the AFC Wild Card with a 10-7 record but missed three games in 2022 and had a 6-8 record in games he started.
After the 2021 season, many were quick to call Jones the next Tom Brady for the Patriots, but those hopes are vanishing as the Patriots front office looks to move on from Jones.
This is a surprise, as Jones wasn’t given much support in 2022 as his offensive coordinator was a former defensive coordinator, and his quarterbacks coach was a special teams coach. Both were removed from their coaching positions as Bill O’Brien was hired as the 2023 offensive coordinator.
In a division where Jones ranks as the worst quarterback, the New York Jets are close to trading for Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots find themselves in a possible tanking situation as the 2023 offense lacks weapons to keep up with the AFC. The possible outcomes in 2023 are bleak for head coach Bill Belichick with dwindling options and possibly looking at another rebuild or retirement.
Mac Jones’ potential landing spots could be the quarterback-needy Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Commanders, or Jones can serve as a bridge quarterback elsewhere.
For New England, this move could mean interest in Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson would immediately make the Patriots contenders in their division and give Jackson the trade he desired.
